TO ensure success of the city’s waste management program, the Dagupan City government is incorporating livelihood opportunities as another facet of its zero-waste campaign

Biodegradable waste from the public market such as rotten fruits and vegetables will now be collected by the Waste Management Division everyday and used as livestock feeds.

Composted waste materials will be placed in a fertilizer processing facility called Rotary Composter Drum located in barangay Bonuan Boquig and these will be converted into organic fertilizer which then can be sold as another means of livelihood.

Meanwhile, on Mayor Belen Fernandez’s directive, six indigent families initially from barangays Malued, Pugaro and Lucao were identified by Social Welfare and Development Office as the first recipients of the livelihood project.

The families will be given financial assistance to start their livestock business such as duck-raising.

Fernandez said buying stations for junk will also be set up in every barangay where residents can sell their recyclable wastes.

“Instead of waiting for the roving buyer of junks, they can go directly to the buying station in the barangay and sell their junks,” the mayor said.

Collected plastics will be processed into plastic pavers through the mayor’s “Plastic to Pavers” project and these will be distributed in public schools to be used as pavements for pathways and floorings.

The mayor is also considering the adoption of the zero-plastic proposal of a company that will be convert plastics into fuel, a process now being adopted in cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

To further encourage barangays to promote excellence in waste management, the city government will give awards and cash incentives to the best implementer and to the cleanest barangay.

She has directed the Task Force on Materials Recovery Facility to conduct a monthly assessment to monitor if proper segregation is being implemented by the 31 barangays.(CIO)
