Dagupan Seafood Plant gears for 24-hour operations

AS demand for its services continue to increase, the Dagupan Seafood Processing Plant (DSPP) is training more workers for its planned 24/7 operations.

Dr. Westly Rosario, interim plant manager, said they will train 100 potential fish deboners and processors from the ranks of unemployed households in Barangay Bonuan Binloc where the plant is located.

The National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC), also headed by Rosario, will hold the training at the Asian Fisheries Academy (AFA) in coordination with Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA).

NIFTDC previously trained 100 unemployed residents of Sitio Korea in Bonuan Binloc, the relocated community that used to occupy the DSPP site, but only 60 have remained.

Rosario said since the plant obtained its Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) accreditation, more exporters are now availing of the services of the DSPP and a day-and-night shifting would be necessary to meet the demand.

With the HACCP accreditation, processed fish products from the DSPP have easier access to the United States, Europe and other foreign markets that enforce strict hygienic standards.

The DSPP, built using a full grant from the Korean government in 2010 through the Korean International Cooperation Agency, is co-owned by the Dagupan City government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

BFAR is managing the facility and bankrolling the cost of operations until such time that the Dagupan government acquires the necessary manpower and technical expertise to handle it.
