SOME 307 dependents of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from the Ilocos Region took the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) scholarship qualifying examinations last September 22.

The activity was facilitated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) where 303 applicants for the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and four aspirants for the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP) were accommodated in various testing venues.

Labor Communications Officer Amapola Villar said that EDSP examinees who will pass the test and make it to the top 100 qualifiers nationwide will be given the opportunity to take any four to five-year baccalaureate course in any college or university in the country accredited by the Commission on Higher Education.

They will be entitled to an academic financial assistance of P30, 000 per semester or P60, 000 per school year.

On the other hand, passers for the CMWSP will receive actual cost of school tuition fees (not exceeding P10, 000 per semester) and economy fare from residence to school, monthly stipend, book and clothing allowance, and insurance to the qualified scholar.

The scholarship will be in effect until completion of the course regardless of the OFW’s membership status with OWWA.

The EDSP is a scholarship program offered to qualified dependents of active OWWA-member OFWs while the CMWSP is a scholarship program for immediate dependents of inactive OFWs or OFW returnees who intend to pursue courses in the priority fields of science and technology as determined by DOST.
