Motels asked to ban teens to check unplanned pregnancies

FOLLOWING a survey that shows a continued increase in teenage pregnancies in Dagupan, the city Population Commission (POPCOM) office has sought the cooperation of owners of motels and beach sheds to ban teenagers in their premises unless accompanied by adults.

City Population Officer Alex De Venecia said a recent survey conducted in 28 of the 31 barangays show there are at least 234 teenage mothers aged 14 to 19 years old.

“With the high number of teenage mothers or parents, we are creating a society dependent upon their parents instead of a society that is striving to succeed in their lives,” De Venecia said.

The survey also revealed that the young mothers mostly came from poor families and still live with their parents.

De Venecia said the Popcom believes that such places as motels, which offer privacy and secrecy, are the common venues where teenagers indulge in premarital sex that lead to unplanned pregnancies.

Meanwhile, the local Popcom office continues its campaign against teenage pregnancies in the city’s high schools with film showing and forums.—Dada Martin Austria
