LINGAYEN–“We were supposed to visit Metro Manila or Bulacan but our Governor (Benguet province) has insisted that we visit Pangasinan instead because it has already hosted the Palarong Pambansa twice. We don’t regret coming here because your facilities are very impressive.”

These were the words of Gina Gacusan, chief of investment division of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) of the Cordillera Autonomous Region who headed the delegation of the provincial government of Benguet, during their visit to Pangasinan last July 31.

Governor Nestor Fongwang of Benguet province sent a letter to Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. with the request to help his technical working group that is currently working on the preparation of the development plan for Wangal Sports Complex in La Trinidad, Benguet.

The TWG is composed of NEDA-CAR, Department of Education (DepEd) Benguet, the provincial planning and development office and provincial engineering office.

The group’s visit sought to benchmark the Pangasinan’s hosting of Palarong Pambansa particularly on the comprehensive design of the facilities, events and administrative management in handling big sports events, and security and cleanliness maintenance of the sports complex.

Rose Baldival, a PPDO staff, disclosed that Fongwang wanted to leave a legacy in the province by building a sports complex.

“Our governor has been dreaming of hosting such national sports event so he sent us here to your province because he knows we will be learning a lot from you, and hosting twice the Palarong Pambansa is something to emulate,” she said.

Atty. Verna-Nava Perez, chairman of the Palarong Pambansa 2012, briefed the visiting group on the facilities of Narciso Ramos Sports Complex and Civic Center that was built in time for the 1995 Palarong Pambansa under the then Pres. Fidel V. Ramos.

And being the head of the Task Force Palaro, Nava added, Espino who was then the Philippine National Police Provincial Director, took a hands-on supervision of the construction of the 800-meter rubberized track oval and it was finished in just 49 days.

“And even it was done in a very short period of time, it has passed the US standard requirement,” Nava said.

Nava shared the experiences of the provincial government in hosting numerous sporting events among them, the Milo Olympics, National Batang Pinoy, International Chess Tournament, National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet (PRISAA).

After the briefing, the group was given a tour around the sports complex and was visibly impressed by the state of the facilities and the maintenance of the gymnasium, air-conditioned dormitory rooms, mini-hospital and the well-maintained rubberized track oval.

Likewise, the group was also brought to the Capitol Complex where they were enthralled by the classic and elegant interior designs of Urduja House and Sison Auditorium as well as the uniform color of government buildings.

“Your province’s achievements are unparalleled, and admittedly we can hardly replicate what your governor has done for your province. And what has impressed us more is the cleanliness and orderliness of your surroundings as well the hospitability of the employees, maswerte ang susunod na gobernador dahil ginawa na ni Gov. Espino ang lahat,” the group said. (Merly R. Tibalao/PIO)
