Red Cross honors Mayor Belen, Coun. Maybelyn

DAGUPAN Mayor Belen Fernandez and Councilor Maybelyn Fernandez will lead awardees on August 2 at the CSI Stadia where they will receive their respective national awards in a ceremony for the Blood Galloners Month this July being celebrated by the Philippine Red Cross (PRC).

The two are included in the School of Honor ceremony of the PRC Board of Governors where awards are presented to 100 members of the exclusive Galloners Club of Pangasinan.

PRC Chapter Administrator Florame Magalong said one can become a member of the Galloners Club after donating a compounded total of one or more gallons of blood.

In the case of Mayor Fernandez, she is not only a blood donor but had initiated blood-letting programs since 2008 participated in by employees of her family-owned City Supermarket Inc. (CSI), usually held during her birthday.

Magalong said that for this humanitarian endeavor, Mayor Fernandez will receive the second highest national award from PRC.

Fernandez also donated some P250,000 for the construction of the expanded blood center of the PRC in Dagupan.

Councilor Fernandez is being honored by the PRC not only for being a yearly blood donor to the PRC but also in supporting all the core programs of the PRC in Pangasinan and in Manila.

The councilor was responsible for the passage of an ordinance in the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dagupan, presided by then Vice Mayor Fernandez, that created the Dagupan City Blood Coordinating Council, the first and only one of its kind in Pangasinan.

The awards ceremony will be co-sponsored by PRC chapter’s partner the Rotary Club of Dagupan that launched the Blood Samaritan Project last year.
