POZORRUBIO–Metal artisans from this town joined a series of trainings facilitated by the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) to improve skills and diversify the product line the local metal craft industry.

The training included lectures on metal treatment technology and metal acid etching delivered by experts from MIRDC, an agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and is the sole government entity directly supporting the metals and engineering industry.

“The training aims to upgrade the skills of sword makers in Pozorrubio,” said Science Research Specialist Immanuel Quiban.

The process of heat treatment involves heating of the metal to pre-determined heat treating temperature, soaking of that metal at that temperature, and cooling of the metal at a pre-determined rate, Engr. Edilbert Dela Peña explained, stressing the importance of selecting the right material for specific products as different materials require different treating temperatures and techniques.

ACID ETCHING

On the other hand, metal acid etching allows the manufacturer to put his creativity and ingenuity in creating products.

Engr. Wilfredo Lim explained the important principles in metal acid etching such as knowing the material, knowing the solution to be used, and the processing time.

He also taught antiquing and electroplating, which can help metal workers vary their products using a rectifier machine.

Others who conducted the training were Engr. Alfredo Anchorez and Felix Banawa.

The training was part of the DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program to encourage small and medium enterprises to adopt technology innovations to improve their operations and expand the reach of their businesses. (PIA-1 Pangasinan/AMM)
