PUBLIC elementary and secondary schools around the province will open its gates on June 3 for the start of academic year 2013-2014.

Senior Inspector Ryan Manongdo, information officer of the Pangasinan Police, said chiefs of police in Pangasinan were alerted by Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Marlou Chan to adopt proactive measures to protect students and teachers from possible troublemakers and predators.

Manongdo assured that police visibility will be maintained inside and around schools to deter drug pushers, among other criminals.

In Dagupan, considered the educational capital and commercial capital of Pangasinan, a total of 11,374 high school students and 20,924 elementary pupils are registered and expected to troop to their classes.

Dr. Edilberto Abalos, education program supervisor of the City Schools Division, said all is set for the opening of classes following the conduct of Brigada Eskwela in the last two weeks.

The Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), which has limited personnel who can be assigned for traffic control on June 3, has tapped the help of communication and civic organizations to help in traffic management during the opening day of school.

The city police headed by Superintendent Christopher Abrahano has likewise coordinated with school officials and security service providers to ensure security inside and outside campuses.

Acting Mayor Fernandez ordered the police to double efforts in securing school security, citing last year’s incident when a coed of the Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) was brutally killed inside the campus.

Abrahano said they are focusing their Operation Balik Eskwela on three areas: traffic direction and control, safety and security inside the schools, and efforts versus petty criminals like pickpockets.

The police will also focus on public places like transport terminals where students go to.

Some private elementary and secondary schools as well as tertiary level institutions will start classes at a later date.—with report from Eva Visperas
