Violence mars Holy Week observance

IT was a bloody Holy Week in the province, and it was not about reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ because there was none.

Seven men fell victims to separate shooting incidents in different towns.

On March 28, Maundy Thursday, Ronald Gascon, 44, was wounded by a still unknown suspect.

On Good Friday, March 29, Romeo de Guzman, 25, in Rosales, was shot and wounded by Hilario Acosta while an unidentified gunman shot and killed 66-year-old former village chief Olegario Bonalos of Brgy. Capanaetan, Mabini.

In Alaminos City, gunmen riding-in-tandem shot to death bar owner 57-year old, Conrado Nieto while a still unidentified suspect gunned down Caezar Doctor, 51, of Bani.

On March 31, Sunday in Dagupan City, Jenny Fong was shot allegedly by her husband Gerald Fong Fong who remains at large at presstime.

And a still unknown gunman shot and wounded Warlito Poblete of Bolinao.

The motives behind the separate shootings are still being investigated by the police.

Pangasinan Police Provincial Office (PPPO) Provincial Director, Sr. Supt. Marlou Chan, said, “We’re still in control of the streets,” noting that only one of the instances was transpired by a riding-in-tandem that hinted of the use of hired guns..

Chan said that as the shootings took place during the Holy Week period, the PPPO captured nine wanted persons with warrants of arrest, arrested five persons, confiscated five firearms, three deadly weapons, and three explosives. .- Johanne R. Macob
