DTI warns vs. use of butane canisters for LPG

THE Department of Trade and Industry has cautioned Pangasinenses against the unsafe practice of using butane canisters as containers for household liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

DTI Provincial Director Peter Mangabat said while there have been no reports so far in the province on the use of these butane canisters, it has become rampant in other parts of the country.

Mangabat stressed that butane canisters are not intended and designed for LPG and therefore may pose danger to users and households.

Dahil manipis, hindi nito kakayanin ang pressure, pwede itong mag leak, at may posibilidad na mag-explode at mag-cause ng sunog,” Mangabat said.

Based on the Philippine National Standard (PNS) 03-01:2000, only welded steel cylinders with a water capacity of one liter to 150 liters are intended for the storage and transport of LPG.

The butane canisters are smaller and thinner and are not compliant with quality and safety requirements for LPG refill.(PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
