LINGAYEN—The summer fun at the beaches here were spoiled last April 14 as three adults and one teenager drowned in two separate incidents in two areas.

This prompted the Provincial Disaster Risk Rescue Management Center (PDRRMC) to call on municipal and city DRRMCs to reinforce their response teams and at the same time reminding beachgoers to always take extra caution.

Ang advice naming dapat palakasin ang kanilang barangay DRRMC lalong-lalo na sa drowning incident prevention gaya ng pagdeploy ng bay watchers; on the part naman ng beach goers, dapat meron ‘yong disiplina at mga paalala lagi kapag naliligo sa dagat,” said Avenix Arenas, PDRRMC Community Affairs Assistant.

Aside from Lingayen, Pangasinan’s other coastal towns and cities that are popular among visitors are: San Fabian, Dagupan City, Binmaley, Sual, Alaminos City, Bani, Bolinao, and Anda.

APRIL 14 VICTIMS

In Barangay Maniboc at about 7:30 in the morning, Donato Macam, 44, drowned as he tried to rescue his son, Danson, 21, who was swimming around the vicinity of the El Puerto Marina Beach Resort.

Donato’s body was immediately found by rescuers, but Danson’s body was retrieved only on April 15, 6:30 a.m. by combined teams of the PDRRMC/Water Search Rescue team in coordination with the 102nd Maritime Police Station and Philippine Coast Guard based in Dagupan City and Sual town.

In another incident, two cousins from Makati City who were on vacation at their hometown Lingayen drowned in the area of Barangay Estanza at 7:30 a.m.

Cleomar Justin Verzosa, 14, and Matthew Pasiliao, 19, residents of Cadena de Amor, Zone 12 in Pembo, Makati City were swept by strong currents and drowned, according to police reports.

Matthew was the first to be taken by the water and his brother, Kevin, tried but failed to rescue him.

Kevin was thereafter rescued by Army Sgt. Boyet Viray.

Meanwhile, Cleomar tried to rescue Matthew but was also drowned in the process.

Barangay officials found Matthew and Cleomar after about an hour and both were pronounced dead.–Johanne R. Macob
