STO. TOMAS—It’s Corn Festival season again in this town, known as the Corn Capital of Pangasinan.

Scheduled activities leading to the main event are: March 21 – street dancing competition and parade of colors, floats, and reigning beauties together with the town’s and barangays’ officials, Department of Education (DepEd) and different Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) staff and personnel and Senior Citizens and NGO Night; March 22 – a cycling event, Drum and Lyre performance, and DepEd Night; and March 23 –  a chess tournament and Gay Pageant.

A cookfest dubbed “Pinaka-Mais-Sarap” will be the highlight of the festival on March 24, alongside a volleyball championship and Cultural Community and Balikbayan Night.

The Corn Festival was launched in 2008, coinciding with the 100th foundation anniversary of Sto. Tomas.

That year, the town sought to break the record for the longest barbecue grill with its 3,803.96 meters (12,480 feet two inches) of corn barbecue using some 121,000 corn ears cooked on 2,208 grills.

The town was logged in the Guinness Book of World Records 2010.–Johanne R. Macob
