Malunggay plantations being readied in 4th District

THE office of 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia informed the local media yesterday that the Bureau of Soils has completed taking samples of soil in the areas where the congresswoman plans to establish two malunggay (Moringa Olifiera) plantations, the first ever in her district.
The soil samples are from San Jacinto and San Fabian towns, the target towns for the plantations, in cooperation with the local government units.
Under the plan developed by De Venecia with Mayor Robert de Vera of San Jacinto and Irene Libunao of San Fabian and their respective councils, the plantations will be managed by organized cooperatives.
De Venecia believes that aside from farming and fishing, alternative livelihood projects such as malunggay planting will greatly benefit the farmers in both towns.
There will be 10 hectares of land that will be planted with malunggay in San Jacinto and another 20 hectares in San Fabian. Both towns are hilly areas and ideal for the planting of the crop.
PROCESSING PLANTS
De Venecia set aside P20 million from her Priority Assistance Development Fund (PDAF) for the construction of malunggay processing plants in each of the two towns.
She said there is already a big demand overseas for processed products from malunggay which is considered today as the “most nutritious plant on earth”.
De Venecia is author of House Bill 6462 that seeks to make malunggay as the national vegetable and to declare November as the malunggay month.
The bill aims to widen the scope of planting malunggay, a plant that is easy to grow and can thrive in any type of soil and weather conditions.
Malunggay is already known to cure some 300 kinds of ailments including cancer and as a mix to produce cosmetic products
For its big nutritive value, malunggay is being hailed as man’s best weapon against malnutrition and poverty.
