FRESH from a silver medal finish in the just concluded 2013 PRISAA National Collegiate Games, the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes put in another brilliant performance by trampling the Urdaneta City University quintet, 74-63, during the opening game of the Metro Urdaneta Athletic Association (MUAA) Invitational Basketball Cup held February 18 at the city’s cultural center and sports complex.

Trailing by a single point in the first quarter, 17-18, the Dukes’ backcourt trio of Roxan Melendez, JayR Andrade and new recruit Aljick Aquino put in a combined total of 43 points, delivering the damaging blows in the third juncture to take a comfortable lead by as much to 20 points, 61-41, and never looked back up to the final buzzer.

“It was an absolute battle in the first period but we got our rhythm in the second and third canto and that made the big difference,” said Head Coach Angel Gumarang.

“We trapped and rattled them after the first quarter and that was the main body of the clash,” echoed Assistant Coach Julius Puzon.

The Dukes next game will be against International Colleges for Efficiency, Inc. on February 27, 3:30 p.m. at the same venue.

The single round-robin tournament is being officiated by the National Basketball Referees Organization (NABRO) Pangasinan chapter and sponsored by LBS Recruitment Solutions Corporation headed by Mangaldan son Loreto B. Soriano.–JAGJr.
