Pangasinan among top rice producers

THANKS to a generally good weather with few typhoons last year, Pangasinan emerged among the four provinces in the Philippines to hit the million metric ton mark in palay production.

Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya, speaking during the KBP forum last week, said the province recorded an average harvest of 4.3 metric tons per hectare, way above the national average of 3.9.

The other three top rice producers are Nueva Ecija, Isabela and Iloilo.

Moya said aside from the good weather conditions, the bumper harvest of Pangasinan farmers was also aided by the various agriculture-related programs of the Espino administration. That included the development of irrigation, assistance in certified seeds and fertilizer procurement, and soft loans.

She said that many of the farms in province, particularly the irrigated areas, are now being primed for a second rice cropping.

She also announced that Pangasinan also leads in the production of corn, vegetables and fish, particularly bangus.
