Barangay secretary in Mangaterem shot dead

LINGAYEN–The barangay secretary of Dorongan Sawat in Mangatarem was shot dead by unidentified armed men riding in tandem at the approach of the Caanlatan Bridge in Barangay Dorongan Punta Sunday night.

Chief Inspector Fidel Junio, officer-in-charge of the Mangatarem Police Station, identified the fatality as Oscar Viray, 53, a retired Philippine Navy enlisted man.

Initial investigation showed that the victim was on his way home at 6:00 p.m., driving his tricycle from the town proper of Mangatarem when he was shot several times by motorcycle riding men following him.

The armed men used a 9 mm. pistol as evidenced by the recovered six pieces of fired empty shells and one piece of slug from the crime scene.

Viray was hit in different parts of the body and was rushed to the Mangatarem District Hospital in Barangay Casilagan where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Motive of the slaying is still unknown and the police are checking all angles, including whether it was work-related.
