50,000 bangus die in Dagupan fishkill

SOME 50,000 bangus floated dead in a fishkill that affected two fishponds in separate barangays on Thursday, the City Agriculture Office reported.

City Agriculturist Emma Molina said the fishkill first occurred in a two-hectare pond in Barangay Tambac following the occurrence of neap tide caused by the changing face of the moon.

The other affected fishpond, measuring three hectares, is located in Barangay Lomboy, where some 25,000 bangus died as a result of overstocking.

The damage was, however, minimized when the affected fishpond owners harvested some of the milkfish that were still alive.

Molina said warnings were sent last Tuesday to fishpond owners about the occurrence of neap tide.

“We already advised bangus growers to be watchful as the neap tide continues,” she said.

Neap tide causes the water in rivers, lakes and ponds to be almost completely stagnant, resulting in drop of dissolved oxygen (DO) level in the water needed by the fish to live.

Molina said the neap tide started last Wednesday and is expected to end on Saturday.

With the minimal volume of fish affected, the market price of bangus was not affected.
