REAL estate properties in Dagupan City, including commercial buildings and private lots, with unpaid real property taxes (RPT) are set to be auctioned on October 30 by the city government.

City treasurer Romelita Alcantara said up for sale are some 500 properties included in the initial list with tax delinquencies over the last 10 years.

Letters and notice of delinquency were sent by the city treasurer’s office but no response has been received from the owners.

“Some of the owners of these went abroad and were unable to pay while others just don’t pay after sending them letters and the warrant of levy which is the final notice before we could auction properties,” Alcantara said.

She noted that the delinquencies in RPT affect the target tax collection of the city and the annual city budget.

Some projects are withheld due to the shortfall in tax collection.

The total amount of the unpaid RPT of these real properties set to be auctioned stand at almost P7.5 million.

Alcantara also reminded the owners that they can still reclaim their property by paying the delinquency on or before October 30.

After the property is to a bidder, the owner can still reclaim it under the right of redemption for a period of one year, but all payments already made by the winning bidder should be refunded by the owner with a two percent monthly interest.

The bidding will be held in front of the city hall and each bidder will be required to put in a P5,000 cash bond.

The RPT is one of the three major sources of income in the city. The two others are business tax and market fees.
