Pangasinan daughter-in-law now LA consul general

LOS ANGELES, California — Pangasinenses living in California will have a chance to meet in person their kabalayen who was recently appointed Los Angeles consul-general.

The former Hellen M. Barber of Abra who is married to Bing dela Vega of San Carlos City will replace Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo-Aragon whose term expires at the end of this month.

Pangasinan Brotherhood-USA President Eddie Caguioa Ferrer said the Dela Vega couple will be honored by the association on December 2 at the Cerritos Performing Arts in Orange County during the group’s “Holiday Interlude” event.

Ferrer expects all the local associations representing the different towns and cities of the province to attend the year-end event.

Dela Vega will assume the post immediately on October 1.

“Her familiarity with the community will serve her well during her tenure having served as consul at the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles from 2003 to 2007”, the outgoing consul general said.

Dela Vega is the second woman to be appointed LA consul general since the Philippine Consulate was opened in 1974.

Dela Vega’s last diplomatic post was Myanmar which began in 2009. Prior to this, she served as deputy chief of mission, minister and Consul General at the Philippine Embassy in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.

Her previous overseas assignments included Tokyo, Japan; Madrid, Spain and Jakarta, Indonesia.
