SAN CARLOS CITY—A notorious leader of a car theft group who bolted jail was hit in a shootout with arresting officers and later died in hospital.

Harold Flores alias Manok of Barangay Tonton, Lingayen died Monday while being treated at the Quezon City General Hospital for gunshot wounds sustained when he resisted arrest five days after he escaped from prison.

Supt. Marlon Tayaba, city police chief, said Flores was hit in the abdomen and leg.

Flores was charged with a string of cases for car theft, drug trafficking, frustrated murder and illegal possession of firearms.

While on the run, Flores’ group encountered lawmen composed of a tracker team led by Tayaba and the Quezon City Police District Intelligence Operatives led by Police Senior Inspector Manolo Refugia on September 14.

Flores bolted jail dawn of September 10 together with three other detainees, namely Ferdinand Sarmiento, Jolly Tuates and John Rafael dela Peña, who are facing theft cases, all from Zone 5, Bayambang.

The longest week I’ve experienced in the service… tiring, exhausting but challenging… elements of San Carlos City police figured in a running gun battle at Congressional Ave. Extension in Quezon City to re-arrest one of the escapees… thank God, we are still intact… I believe that nothing can escape the long arms of the law forever… someday, somehow, I will account all of these escapees… one down, three to gowrote Tayaba in his Facebook account.—Eva Visperas
