Maternal Healthcare highlighted at 2nd Buntis Congress

LINGAYEN–Some134 pregnant women from the towns of Alcala, Bayambang, Basista, Sto. Tomas and Bautista attended the 2nd Buntis Congress organized by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) on August 15 at the Maekrisanne Garden Resort in Bautista.

Anchored on the theme “Ensuring Safe and Healthy Pregnancy and Responsible Parenthood for Better and Brighter Future of Filipino Family”, the activity aimed at ensuring maintenance of health and well being of mothers during pregnancy and ensure the well-being of the baby.

Provincial Health Officer Anna Marie Teresa De Guzman said, “The activity is in consonance with the province’s support for the millennium development goals by improving maternal health and reducing the number of Filipino women dying because of complications during childbirth”.

She added that improving maternal healthcare is a directive of Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. who wants pregnant women to be encouraged to undergo facility-based delivery in hospitals to assure that proper healthcare and attention will be given to them before, during and after delivery.

De Guzman thanked the partners of PHO and Municipal Rural Health Units (RHUs) as she urged them to continue making Pangasinan the home of healthiest Filipinos.

Bautista Mayor Amado I. Espino III welcomed the participants to his town and stressed the importance of proper healthcare for a pregnant woman to ensure the well being of the child in her womb.

Fifth District Board Members Danilo Uy and Clemente Arboleda who attended the activity on to represent the governor, said that with the present administration’s will to help the “poorest of the poor Pangasinenses”, province-owned hospitals are now equipped with new medical facilities and are now at par with private hospitals to ensure quality healthcare for Pangasinenses.

Also present during the congress were: Dr. Betha Fe Castillo, president of Philippine Obstetric and Gynecological Society – Region 1; Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1 Director Myrna Cabotaje; Bayambang District Hospital Chief Nicolas Miguel; Dr. Rico Reyes from Region 1 Medical Center; Municipal Health Officers (MHUs) Dr. Shirante C. Parayno (Alcala), Dr. Paz F. Vallo, (Bayambang), Dr. Lilibeth Fermin (Basista), Dr. Nestor Carino (Sto. Tomas) and Dr. Alfredo La Guardia (Bautista) together with some RHU staff members from participating municipalities.

Lectures on breastfeeding, safe motherhood, hairdressing, foot spa and massage as well as dental and laboratory check-up for pregnant mothers were held after the opening program. The participants’ registration as PhilHealth members was also completed.
