THE Brigada Eskwela, a nationwide program enjoining community participation in preparing schools for the opening of the new academic year, started last week as classes in preparation for the start of classes on June 4.

In Dagupan, the City Schools Division said the first day of the weeklong Brigada Eskwela on May 21 was successful with multi-sector participation.

Dr. Alma Ruby Torio, division superintendent, said a lot of teachers and stakeholders helped even as she stressed that Dagupan schools maintain cleanliness all year round.

“Everyday is Brigada Eskwela day here in Dagupan,” Torio said.

Torio said there were the usual activities during the conduct of Brigada such as the repair of chairs, windows, repainting of buildings and cleanliness in the environment and assured parents that there will be enough chairs for the students.

“We want to assure parents that all children who will come to school will have chairs to sit on,” she said.

The problem of flooding was also addressed with the unclogging of drainage canals and elevation of school pathways, including the elevation of main roads that lead to schools, Torio said.

Targeting a 1:1 ratio for students and books, Torio said textbooks have been delivered to every school based on the orders and reports of school heads and principals. A buffer supply is also available at the division office in case demand increases, she said.

Torio said the Department of Education is prepared for the yearly increase of students in public schools, particularly with transferees as she noted that private schools have increased tuition fees for school year 2012-2013.

She also stressed that public schools uphold the ‘no collection policy’ upon enrolment and even the authorized contributions remain voluntary. (Venus H. Sarmiento/PIA-Pangasinan)
