High-value crops aplenty in Pangasinan

FOOD supply should be no problem in the province with sufficient harvests of high-value crops, including corn, vegetables, and mango.

Edmundo Quinit, Region 1 chief of the Agricultural Extension Program Division of the Department of Agriculture (DA), said farmers in Pangasinan planted enough high-value crops last year to meet local demand.

The country has been experiencing a mild La Niña causing above average amount of rainfall for irrigation, Quinit said during the KBP Forum on Thursday.

For rice supply, the province harvested last year from a total 242,433 hectares of land, which constituted 60 percent of the palay harvested in Region 1.

The agri official said Pangasinan currently has no need to import rice and is in fact even capable of exporting.

Quinit added that Pangasinan also has the most number of mango trees planted.

Meanwhile, all provinces in Region 1 registered an increase in palay yield per hectare last year, with Ilocos Norte topping the list with 4.6 metric tons per hectare. (PIA-Pangasinan)
