NFA eases procurement process

THE National Food Authority (NFA) has made it easier for farmers to sell their palay to the NFA buying stations by delegating the issuance of an authority to deliver (ATD) to the warehouse supervisors who directly receive the delivery.

“The (new) process will cut on time and expenses on the part of the farmers,” said NFA Regional Director Danilo Pastrana.

Pastrana explained that previously, a farmer seeking to sell his palay to the NFA first had to secure an ATD from the provincial office where the buying station is located.

“Our procurement program is geared towards giving our farmers a ready market for their palay and at the same time offering them a better return of investment,” he said.

Pastrana expressed hoped that with the policy, more farmers will be encouraged to sell their palay to the NFA.

The agency’s buying price is still at P17.00 per kilogram for clean and dry palay with an additional P0.70 incentive for farmers cooperatives and P0.40 incentive for individual farmers.

The NFA is targeting to buy this month some 65,000 bags of palay from the main cropping season.

Pastrana said this will form part of the region’s buffer stock to ensure food security and help in stabilizing the price of the food commodity in the region.
