ALAMINOS CITY–With the changing weather patterns affecting water movement at the Hundred Islands National Park (HINP), the Coast Guard and the city tourism office here have adopted measures to further ensure the safety of boat travel for tourists.

City Tourism Officer Miguel Sison, said wearing a life vest before boarding the boat is now a strict policy in the islands.

A capability training for the island crew is also being conducted regularly to enhance their skills and knowledge in boating and ferrying passengers.

“We have to enrich and refresh their knowledge. Basically, they know what’s expected of them,” Sison said.

Lt. Dennis Rapal of the Sual Coast Guard said movements of motorized boats at the HINP are now closely being monitored especially when the current is too strong.

The patterns of high tide and low tide have been changing, said Rapal, and the new phenomenon is being closely observed.

Minsan, hindi natin nakikita sa surface pero sa ilalim may current,”he said.

Strong winds may also affect boat travel but passengers can seek shelter in the small islands along the way when the wind proves to be too strong for navigation, he added.

The HINP has at least 350 boats ferrying passengers daily from the Lucap wharf to the main islands. (PIA-Pangasinan)
