R1MC to open 141 permanent positions in 2012

SOME 141 permanent items for doctors, nurses and paramedical personnel will be filled at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) under its rationalization plan next year.

Dr. Roland Joseph Mejia, R1MC head, said the rationalization is part of the national government’s program to increase the workforce of the Department of Health (DoH).

At the same time, current hospital personnel are undergoing training based on the Continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) standards program to improve services, Mejia said during a radio interview last week.

The R1MC was recently tagged by the DoH as a “prime hospital” following renovations and expansion projects undertaken this year.

Mejia, however, lamented that the scheduled upgrading has been delayed by lack of funds and damages caused by Typhoon “Pepeng” in 2009.

Pepeng damaged the hospital’s supplies, equipment and infrastructures, which needed P415 million to rehabilitate.

No rehabilitation fund was provided by the national government and the repairs were undertaken using the hospital’s income from paying patients.

Substantial part of the rehabilitation is sourced from revenues earned from patients, he said.

Mejia said the hospital currently makes about P1 million a month, a significant increase from about only P80,000 in previous years.

The government-owned hospital has modified its policies and guidelines to distinguish between patients who are capable of paying their bills and those who could not based on standards set by the DoH.

“We are here to co-exist with other hospitals because we only serve people who are loyal to the R1MC and those who can not afford hospitalization in private hospitals,” he said.

The R1MC, which has a 300-bed capacity, caters on average to 400 patients. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
