‘Day-coding’ set for bangus marketing

By July 24, 2011Business, News

THE day-coding scheme will no longer apply to tricycles in the city alone but for marketing of bangus as well!

The supply of bangus (milkfish) at the Dagupan market will be controlled under an experimental selling scheme in an effort to boost price which has dropped since the fishkill in Anda and Bolinao in June.

Bangus from Dagupan will be sold every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, while those from other towns will be sold every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thursday will be an open day for all producers.

This scheme will be in effect for the next two weeks to reduce the supply of milkfish, which has been experiencing low demand.

Mayor Benjamin Lim said the scheme was suggested by the local consignacion owners, whose businesses suffered when news spread that bangus harvested from Anda and Bolinao at the height of fishkill surfaced the public market.

Many consumers have since been avoiding bangus for fear that bangus vendors might be passing off Dagupan bangus for supply from the fishkill.

Due to the low demand, bangus has been selling at levels much lower than the regular prices before the fishkill hit.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez has also earlier called for a more aggressive promotion of Dagupan bangus to convince buyers that the city’s produce is free from the effects of the fishkill. (PIA-Pangasinan)
