Schools celebrate “green” Independence Day

INDEPENDENCE Day was celebrated in Dagupan schools this year creating further awareness on the need to preserve and protect the environment.

Tree-planting activities were done simultaneously in all the city’s public elementary and high school campuses in line with the government’s target of planting 1.6 billion trees by 2016.

In West Central Elementary School 1, Principal Reynardo Barrozo said environmental awareness is one aspect of independence that must be practiced.

Mayor Benjamin Lim headed the tree-planting at the Dagupan City National High School together with Schools Division Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio, while Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez led the planting of 1,000 mahogany seedlings in schools in Barangays Salisay, Bolosan and Mamalingling.

Another 2,000 seedlings will be planted in the same barangays soon, according to Fernandez. (PIA-Pangasinan)
