Red Tide alert for Anda, Bolinao

By April 24, 2011Headlines, News

RED tide continues in Anda and Bolinao and the public have been advised that shellfish such as oysters and mussels as well as alamang from these two coastal towns remain unsafe for consumption.

The April 4 bulletin from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) that warned of the presence of red tide has not been superceded.

The report said the waters of Bolinao and Anda remain positive for paralytic shellfish poisoning that is beyond the regulatory level.

However, the red tide toxins have not spread to other coastal areas in western Pangasinan.

It has been more than a month now since BFAR first imposed the ban on collecting, transporting, selling and eating shellfish and alamang from these areas.

Officials of the two towns, however, stressed that only shellfish are affected and not fish such as bangus, which is one of their main products.

Anda Municipal Agriculturist Evangeline Tomas says her office continues to strictly enforce the red tide ban to ensure that no shellfish from the town are collected and brought to the market.

Meanwhile, the same bulletin stated that Masinloc Bay in neighboring Zambales is now also positive for red tide toxins.—LM
