Mayor Lim shuts down Bacayao Sur open dumpsite

DAGUPAN Mayor Benjamin Lim has ordered Barangay Chairman Gregorio Taminaya of Bacayao Sur to immediately close the open dumpsite being maintained by the village in violation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) Leduina Co recommended the issuance of a “cease and desist order” against the dumpsite, which is reportedly owned by Taminaya.

A PENRO inspection team found out last January 17 that the disposal site, supposedly functioning as a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), had a huge amount of solid wastes estimated at around 80 to 100 truck loads, making it an open dumpsite.

Open dumpsites are no longer allowed under Section 37 of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Republic Act No. 9003).

“This is the first barangay here, which has been issued a closure order as the site does not conform to the waste management policy of the city. There are MRFs operating in other barangays doing waste segregation, but this one is already operating as an open dumpsite and has become a health and sanitation hazard,” said Lim.

Barangay Pantal is also reportedly violating the law and is due for inspection.

Gagawa tayo ng paraan to help these barangays to improve their MRFs,” said Lim.(CIO)
