Poll bets in Dagupan to sign peace covenant

ALL candidates in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in Dagupan City are set to sign peace covenants during the campaign period from October 14 to 23.

City elections officer Remarque Ravanzo said the candidates will sign the covenant after a scheduled candidates’ forum per barangay to be moderated by their barangay pastoral councils.

Dagupan has been included in the watchlist of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Commission on Elections for the coming elections but Ravanzo declined to acknowledge that the peace covenants are in response to this.

Nevertheless, Ravanzo hailed the watchlist prepared by PNP because it means additional troops may be sent to Dagupan to help maintain law and order.

Ravanzo said the Bonuan area may need to be closely watched because of its big voting population, with some 14,000 voters from Bonuan Gueset alone.

On the other hand, the island barangays, which include Calmay, Carael, Salapingao, Lomboy and Pugaro, are too far away from mainland Dagupan City, he said.

At the same time, Ravanzo announced that as of Friday, there were 678 persons from Dagupan City who already filed their certificates of candidacy for different positions for the Barangay and SK elections since Friday, October 8.

He expects the number to further increase, as the deadline for filing certificates of candidacy is still midnight of October 13.

There are 90,673 registered voters for the barangay polls and 4,273 for the Sangguniang Kabataan polls in all 31 barangays of Dagupan City.

There are 305 clustered precincts in Dagupan in the coming election, including an additional precinct to be placed at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Bonuan to allow inmates who are qualified voters to exercise their right.—LM
