ECOP offers incentives for employees

TWO years after the last wage adjustment in Region 1 was implemented in 2008, no new petition for an increase has so far been filed but employers are open to giving out other incentives to employees.

Businessman Salvador Poserio, provincial head of the Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), said employers can grant non-wage benefits like rice allocation, health care, and assistance during calamities, among others.

Hindi lang tayo nakatuon sa minimum wage. Puwedeng magbigay ng productivity incentive yong employer pag maganda ang negosyo,” Poserio said during last week’s KBP Forum.

Petitions for wage adjustment are filed before the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB).

He said ECOP, in cooperation with the government’s labor department, always aims to preserve and generate jobs while ensuring productivity.

The minimum wage in Region 1 is currently pegged at P180 to P220 daily.

Whether or not there is a petition for a wage increase, the RTWPB continuously monitors the economic and social environment to determine the need for a salary adjustment.

TOURISM INDUSTRY

Meanwhile, Poserio expressed hope that the tourism industry will soon recover from the impact of the hostage-taking drama last week in Metro Manila, which cost the lives of eight tourists from Hong Kong.

He said a full investigation on the matter may help ease the strained relationship between the Philippines and Hong Kong.
