NIA to farmers: Plant now

URDANETA CITY–El Niño is officially over, according to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), and with the rains pouring in daily now, farmers have been advised to start planting this month.

NIA Regional Director John Celeste said farmers don’t have to wait for July to start planting so that they can harvest earlier, plant for the next season, and possibly do a third cropping.

“Thank God El Niño which we first thought would last till July has finally ended with the daily rains since the last week of May,” said Celeste.

Celeste said NIA took advantage of El Niño by repairing projects in preparation for the next cropping seasons.

Repairs were made on the irrigation systems maintained by NIA in San Fabian, Domuloc, Bugallon; Agno River Irrigation System, Agno-Dipalo River Irrigation System, Lower Agno River Irrigation System and some communal irrigation systems.

NIA, the provincial government under Governor Amado Espino Jr., and some congressmen also distributed water pumps to farmers’ associations during the drought.

RE-REGULATING POND

Meanwhile, Celeste announced that the construction of the province’s first-re-regulating pond is now in full swing using the P4.2 billion loan extended to the Philippine government by China’s Export and Import Bank.

The project, set for completion in 2013, will irrigate 35,000 hectares of land in eastern and central Pangasinan.–LM
