TIGHT security measures will be adopted to ensure the safety of revelers attending the Bangusan Street Party, the biggest crowd-drawer and penultimate event of the 17-day Dagupan Bangus Festival set on April 30.

This was disclosed by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chair of the Bangus Festival for the third consecutive year, as she announced that Army reservists and thousands of volunteers will be mobilized to assist the police and the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) in maintaining peace and order during the event.

The festival’s executive committee has tapped Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, a captain in the Philippine Army reserve force, to be in charge of the security arrangement during the party, in coordination with the police and POSO.

Noting that the Bangusan Street Party drew a crowd of about 700,000 last year, Tamayo called on all sectors in the city to help maintain peace and order and immediately report presence of potential troublemakers to the authorities.

The vice mayor said the area for the Bangusan Street Party will be extended from 2.4 kilometers last year to 3.2 kilometers to ease the flow of pedestrian traffic.

The councilor said the whole stretch will be divided into several zones and each zone will be secured by specific volunteer organizations.

The Bangusan Street Party has been tagged by the Department of Tourism as the biggest street party in the Philippines based on the 700,000 crowd that turned up for the event last year.

Fernandez said a conservative estimate of 10 per cent increase in participants is seen this year.

HOTELS

Meanwhile, Fernandez said she expects all hotels and inns in the city to be fully booked soon following last week’s opening of the Bangus Festival.

She said hotels in the nearby towns of Calasiao, San Fabian, Binmaley, Lingayen, as well as Alaminos City and Urdaneta City can provide alternative lodging for the visiting Bangus Fest revelers.—LM
