Children’s Day to open Bangus Fest

WHAT better way to call attention to the Dagupan City’s future than to declare the first day of the Bangus Festival 2010 as Children’s Day?

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, who chairs the festival for the third consecutive year, announced that unlike previous festivals, the city’s children will take center stage during the opening of the Dagupan Bangus Festival 2010 on April 16.

She said the new program is a departure from the past festivals when Gilon-Gilon ed Dalan served as the opening event for the festival.

Instead, the festival will be ushered in by a colorful children’s parade around the city that will feature mascots from various firms and food chains, and carnival performers such as stilt walkers, uni-cyclists and jugglers.

Fernandez said the change in the format is in line with the vision of Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. to make Dagupan a more livable city for children.

The vice mayor said she is encouraging children of fishermen to join the parade and other events for the Children’s Day and at the same time has extended an invitation to children of other nationalities residing in the city to join the festivities.

The Pre-Disney Show presented during the Dagupan City Fiesta in December, prepared and choreographed by students from private schools, will be re-staged for children of poor families, some of whom are enrolled in different day care centers.

Meanwhile, Fernandez said several new events have also been lined up in this year’s Bangus Festival, which has recently been hailed by the Department of Tourism as the biggest street party in the Philippines in terms of the attendance with close to a million people that joined last year.

One of the new events is the National Karate-do Tournament to be held at the CSI Stadia to be participated in by rated karate players and enthusiasts from all over the country and abroad.

And for the first time in the nine-year history of the Bangus Festival, the Tossed Salad, a favorite dish in Baguio City, will be brought to Dagupan by the Baguio Hotels and Inns (BAHAI) in cooperation with the Hotels and Inns Association of Dagupan headed by Councilor Alfredo Quinto Sr.

Another new event is the Yaman ed Norte (Treasure of the North) to be held at the CSI Stadia that will showcase all the One Town, One Product entries of Regions 1, 2 and 3 and the Cordilleras.

In the popular Festivals of the North, more street dancing champions from various parts of Luzon have signed up to participate.

Fernandez assured that the famous Dinagyang Dance Troupe of Iloilo will be back on stage for an exhibition dance.–LM
