THE biggest number of violators in Region 1 since the gun ban took effect on January 10 were arrested in Pangasinan, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office.

Police Chief Superintendent Constante Azares Jr. , regional director, said 20 were arrested in Pangasinan, 11 in La Union,  seven in Ilocos Norte and six in Ilocos Sur.

Confiscated were 26 firearms of different calibers and 637 gun replicas.

Azares explained that possession of gun replicas is also considered a violation under the Commission on Election rules as these can be used to intimidate voters.

The gun ban exempts only members of the police or military and other law enforcement agencies who are in proper uniform.

Azares also warned that barangay chairman would be arrested if they carry their government-issued guns outside of their residence even within their respective jurisdiction as they are not among those exempted from the gun ban.

There are 1,306 barangay kapitans who received a shotgun each from the provincial government last year. Of these, only 774 have so far returned their firearms to the police following a recall order issued by the provincial police chief.

Azares said checkpoints have been established to restrict the movement of unauthorized persons carrying firearms.

PAGS

Meanwhile, Azares said the police have also launched an operation against partisan armed groups (PAGs) who may be used by politicians in the election.

A special task force has been formed to go after the PAGs.—LM
