CALASIAO—The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Region 1 office based here reported a five percent increase in tax collection in 2009 at P4.7-billion compared to last year’s P4.4-billion.

This was affirmed by the statement of Regional Director Tomas Rosales even as he acknowledged that 50 percent of the BIR’s tax collection in the Ilocos Region were from Pangasinan.

The increase represents revenues collected mainly from income tax and Value-Added Tax.

Rosales said if not for Typhoon Pepeng that heavily devastated most parts of Pangasinan in October, they would have collected even more.

He pointed out that as of September, his office already hit its goal for the period but the flooding severely affected businesses and livelihoods, resulting in a collection that was seven percent lower than targeted.

“But still, we overshot our 2008 record and I think that would be okay considering what befell our area,” Rosales said.

He attributed this to the cooperation of compliant taxpayers, government information campaigns with the help of the media, and the BIR’s various programs such as “Oplan Kandado” wherein business establishments with tax underpayments were padlocked.

Meanwhile, an ongoing nationwide revamp among BIR top regional and district officers is ongoing in an effort to strengthen tax collection efforts.#
