ARNEL Quirimit, the 2003 Tour Pilipinas king, proved to his younger rivals that he’s still a rider to be reckoned with by ruling the 230-kilometer Jun Ebdane Cup Pangasinan Day Cycling Classic held on November 13.

Quirimit, 34, from Pozorrubio, won by staying with the lead pack for the first 200 kilometers and eventually bolted the pack at the homestretch. Then he outsprinted his breakaway partner, Manaoag pride Ericson Obosa, in the last 250 meters to pocket the P20,000 top prize.

Obosa who came in a bike length behind for second place bagged P15,000. Sta. Maria son Jesus Garcia followed after 54 seconds, landing third for P10,000.

Tarlac City-born and now Binalonan resident Merculio Ramos Jr. and Mangaldan native Renato Sembrano finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Rounding up the top ten were: Mark Julius Bonzo, 6th ; Oscar Rendole, 7th; Santy Barnachea, 8th; Sherwin Carrera, 9th and Reynaldo Navarro, 10th.

There were 75 starters who were flagged off by former Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. and Mangaldan town chief executive Herminio Romero.

A throng of spectators watched the lung-busting road battle that started and finished in Mangaldan, traversing the central and western part of Pangasinan.—JAG, Jr.
