Binmaley priest is taekwondo blackbelter

WHEN not attending to his priestly duties for the Catholic Church, Father Rojohn Ramirez, assigned at the Jesus the Nazarene Church in Binmaley, is busy honing his taekwondo skills.

A blackbelter, Fr. Rojohn recently brought home several medals from the just concluded World Taekwondo Culture Expo held in Moju South Korea on July 3-10.

Fr. Rojohn, the only representative from Region I, competed in the tournament participated in by more than 40 delegates coming from different countries.

He bagged a silver for the sparring and two bronze medals for the forms and extreme taekwondo.

Fr. Ramirez, ordained as a priest in 2002, said in an interview that he had the blessing of Archbishop Oscar Cruz to join the competition.

He clarified that taekwondo is not a violent sport as players wear protective gear and the main aim is to hit the pads and not the opponent, and pointed out how the sport actually helps him maintain a discipline and become physical fit.

And when he goes to competitions, he does not leave his priesthood behind. He’s always asked to lead prayers for for the team.
