Dagupan City SK set to develop swimmers

Now that the Olympic-size swimming pool in Dagupan is back in form, the city government will pursue programs to train young swimmers who will compete for the city.

Councilor Carlo Alipio Fernandez, chairman of the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation, said a training program and regular swimming clinics will be organized to motivate and develop potential athletes who will represent the city in competitions.

“Now that it had been rehabilitated, we can revive the interest of our youth in swimming,” said Fernandez, adding that the city used to harvest medals in regional events until the government-owned swimming pool was left to deteriorate without proper maintenance.

Fernandez, himself a University of the Philippines swimming scholar and a be-medaled swimmer, will lead the training program.

Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. is set to hand over the swimming pool to a new management team that will include members of SK, to oversee the maintenance of the facility.

The newly-refurbished swimming pool was the official venue of the swimming event in the recent Ilocos Region Athletic Association Meet.

The swimming pool, including a restaurant, was built in 1995 by the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) for the Palarong Pambansa that year.

PTA later handed it over to the Dagupan City government but the latter failed to maintain it over the years.—LM
