BALIKBAYANS are spearheading a tennis competition in Binalonan on February 21 as a prelude to a planned province-wide competition next year.

The one-day tourney, to be held in conjunction with the celebration of Binalonan town fiesta, is being organized and sponsored by California-based Dr. Randy Oriel and Hawaii resident Dado Lajola.

Some 30 lawn tennis players from the town, including members of the Binalonan Tennis Club headed by Dr. Carlos Catbagan, will be competing for cash and trophy.

“The tourney is like a practice event and we are contemplating to stage an annual province-wide tournament during summer time to start next year,” Oriel said.

“In tennis, like boxing, Filipinos have a great chance to win in international competitions like what Francis Alcantara did recently in Melbourne, Australia where he won with a Chinese partner the juniors’ doubles. I wish that someday there will be an international champion from Pangasinan,” he added.—JAG, Jr.
