URDANETA CITY—The effect is negligible.

This is how the city mayor here described the impact of the opening of an SM mall, the biggest chain in the country, in neighboring Rosales town on Urdaneta’s businesses

In an interview with The PUNCH, Mayor Amadeo Perez Jr. said businessmen in their city have not felt a decline in the number of their patrons.

Nonetheless, mall owners in Urdaneta have lowered their prices to be more competitive with the SM mall that opened last month.

Meanwhile, in Dagupan City, Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, owner of the CSI chain of malls in the province including one in Urdaneta, said her group has also initiated special promotions for their customers.

“So far, we do not feel a negative effect from the opening of that big mall in Rosales. Our customers are still with us as evidenced by their continued influx especially during the Christmas season,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez also said she is confident that people will continue to patronize shops that are most convenient and accessible to them.#
