Congressmen defend votes vs. impeachment

FIVE congressmen of Pangasinan voted against the fourth impeachment case against President Gloria Arroyo.

The impeachment case was filed by Jose de Venecia III and five others, and endorsed by his father, former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., 4th district representative.

Those who voted against the impeachment, however, stressed that their vote was not in any way anti-De Venecia.

At presstime, three talked to the PUNCH and defended their votes, saying the impeachment proceedings would only impede the government’s programs.

Sixth District Rep. Conrado Estrella III said he voted against “because we want stability in our country and the elections are just around the corner”.

For her part, Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas, said “Let’s make her (President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) finish her term so we can move forward,” adding that her vote was not against JDV but “a vote for the country”.

Second District Rep. Victor Agbayani, a known ally of De Venecia and was the lone Pangasinan congressman who voted against the latter’s ouster as House Speaker, declined to explain his vote only pointing out that he did not discuss the impeachment issue with De Venecia.

“Perhaps Manong Joe’s (de Venecia) not taking the issue up with me meant to say that he would respect my vote either way,” Agbayani said.#
