San Carlos, San Fabian chessers top Villegas Cup Tournament

SAN CARLOS CITY chess genius Zaldy Falcon garnered a total of 4.0 points to top the open category and bagged the P2,000 first prize of the 2008 Villegas Cup Chess Tournament held last October 25 and 26 at Chekongkim Restaurant in San Fabian.

Binmaley wizard Virgilio Rosario, Sr. placed second worth P2,000 while Constante Sevidal of the host San Fabian town landed third netting P800.

In the 16-years-and-under division, 14-year old Christian Fangon of San Fabian Joyland School went past 22 other youthful wood pushers to accumulate a total of 4.5 points to clinch the P1,500 top prize.

Fangon’s townmate Noli Alcantara and UPang student Baron Wayne Noriega of Dagupan City, both 16 years of age, placed second and third bringing home P1,000 and P800, respectively.

The two-day tournament was organized and sponsored by fourth district Board Member Riby Z. Villegas with national master Solomon Bautista as the chief arbiter-programmer and directed by Mateo C. Blanquera.

“We staged the tournament to help sharpen the strategic skills of our province mates especially the young ones,” said Villegas.—JAG, Jr.
