SAN FERNANDO CITY–Bountiful palay harvests in Ilocos Region led the National Food Authority (NFA) to purchase more than it targeted for October.

According to NFA Regional Director Joseph de la Cruz, the government agency procured 446,659 bags of palay in October, more than double the target of 264,000 bags.

Since September this year, the NFA has procured a total of 549,202 bags from the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

With the encouraging production from farmers so far, De la Cruz said the government is optimistic that the region will be able to produce one million bags of palay by the end of December.

The NFA is giving a fertilizer incentive of P1,800 to individual farmers or organization for every 50 bags of palay, each with a net weight of 50 kilos.

For the September-October period, NFA granted P15.8 million as fertilizer incentive to 7,119 individual farmers and 72 farmers organization

De la Cruz clarified that only farmers with NFA passbooks are entitled to fertilizer incentive.

He also called on farmers to sell their palay clean, dry and ready for storage in order to avail of the government support price of P17 per kilo.

While the NFA maintains its buying price of P17 per kilo, the price could go down depending on the moisture content or wetness and purity of palay sold—LM
