CONSUMERS in the capital Metro Manila and soon elsewhere in the country no longer have to worry about being duped into buying bangus being passed off as Dagupan or Bonuan Bangus.

The tagged bangus tail will tell all.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional office in Ilocos launched the use of tail band for Bonuan bangus last week at the World Trade Centre in Metro Manila.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said a distinct blue tag on the bangus identifying it as being sourced from Pangasinan should serve to protect both the buyers and the producers.

The light blue plastic tape tag around the fish tail has a security design placed by a tag dispenser and will be first displayed and sold in the market by a bangus grower in Dulao, Aringay, La Union.

“I am very optimistic this standard will easily win the nod of mall owners whose grocery sections have fish to sell,” Domenden said.

The tagging will be made at the site of production.

Bonuan bangus also has distinct features with its head, body and tail shorter than the average bangus but a wider belly portion.

The water quality and level in the Bonuan area, which is about .8 meter, make it the most ideal for producing natural foods for bangus.

A bangus magnate from Bolinao was the first to signify intent to adopt the project but time constraint prevented him from pursuing it, Domenden said.

About 100 to 140 metric tons of bangus from Pangasinan are sold daily in Metro Manila.#
