BAYAMBANG—Despite the global financial crisis which is affecting the Philippines, Northern Luzon’s retail giant, City Supermarket Inc. (CSI), stays on course with its expansion plans by opening a new branch here.

The CSI Bayambang, the 12th branch of the CSI chain of shopping malls, supermarkets and super-stores, is positioned to cater to this burgeoning town of Bayambang and neighboring towns, including northern Tarlac.

Bayambang, a first class town and once the capital of the Philippines, has the most number of barangays in the province.

“Many look at the current financial crisis as both -positive and negative. For us, we look at it more as an opportunity”, said Dagupan City Vice Mayor Fernandez, president and chairman of the board of the CSI group.

Fernandez’s company operates shopping malls, supermarkets and superstores in 7 cities in the region.

“In this financial crisis, CSI is taking an aggressive move to position itself in places where it is most needed in order to help consumers cope with hard times, generate employment and help improve the economy,” Fernandez said.

The opening of the newest two-storey CSI branch created more than 100 jobs, about 90 per cent of which were filled up by local hands.

The mall will also house branches of the Siapno-Tada Optical, Filco, St. Joseph Drug Store, Goldilocks, McDonald’s, Shakey’s and others.

Fernandez said two more CSI branches will soon be opened within Pangasinan.

“We want to move closer to the people, that is why we want to build two more of these soon in places where there are lots of consumers who want to buy from us,” she told newsmen on Wednesday after the blessing of CSI Bayambang by Fr. Cris Cancino.

Mayor Ricardo Camacho hailed the opening of the CSI Bayambang not only because of the taxes that it can contribute to the town’s coffer but also the employment opportunities that it can generate for the people.—LM
