7-year old wins in Asean chess

SAN FABIAN-Meet another source of pride for Pangasinenses.

Seven-year old Danica Alexis Ablang, a second grader at Joyland School here and playing for Team Philippines, won four medals in the recently concluded 9th Asean Age Group Chess Championship held in Danang, Vietnam from June 9 to 18, 2008.

Ablang, who was previously proclaimed champion in April 2008 by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) for the Girls Under 8 Age Group, qualified as official player of the Team Philippines in the Asean games.

She won three silver medals playing for Team Philippines in the under 8 girls’ category in Standard Chess, Rapid Chess and Blitz Chess, and a bronze inthe individual Blitz Chess event.

The ASEAN Championship was attended by 26 participants from five countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Vietnam.

Ablang will further pursue qualification for participation in the World Youth Chess Championship to be held in Vietnam in October 2008.

She will play with other NCFC age group qualifiers in round-robin series scheduled in the coming months.—LM
