LINGAYEN-The scheduled festivities for the Pista’y Dayat were formally started with a thanksgiving mass and the signing of a covenant that seeks to bolster environmental protection and conservation of the Lingayen Gulf.

The signing was spearheaded by Governor Amado Espino Jr. with mayors of 12 coastal municipalities and cities of Pangasinan who joined the provincial government in its efforts to achieve sustainable coastal resources management and development.

The signing also launched the province’s ‘Search for the Cleanest Coastal Municipality or City’ to be participated in by all coastal towns and cities.

The province’s 12 coastal towns and two cities are: Bolinao, Anda, Bani, Infanta, Dasol, Burgos, Agno, Sual, Labrador, Lingayen, Binmaley, San Fabian, Alaminos and Dagupan.-

“The signing of the covenant was a symbol of unity among multi-sectoral groups to achieve holistic and complementary strategies in confronting the issues besetting the Lingayen Gulf and the environment as a whole,” said Espino.

The covenant primarily seeks the commitment of local government units “to ensure the balanced relationship of economic growth and environmental integrity through the adoption of sustainable development policies, legislation and practices.”

The LGU executives committed themselves to support the programs focusing on pollution control, solid waste management, law enforcement, fishery and aquaculture management and environment conservation.

Espino explained that the covenant will serve as an added mechanism to enable the local executives and local policy makers to effectively perform their mandate.

The signing of the covenant was witnessed by members of the board headed by Vice Governor Marlyn Primicias-Agabas, town mayors and key officials of various line agencies of the province and region.-LM
