Rice supply in Pangasinan assured until August

LINGAYEN—Rice supply won’t be a problem for Pangasinenses, at least until August.

With 2.8 million bags of rice currently on stock, the National Food Authority (NFA) based here said there should be no shortage problems.

The inventory consists of government stock of about 69,880 available at their warehouses, commercial stock from retailers, wholesalers and millers at 112,136 bags and household stocks from farm and non-farm sources of more than 2.6 million.

Furthermore, NFA Western Pangasinan Manager Edilberto Libatique said they are also expecting the arrival of 400,000 bags of imported rice for their area before the end of February.

“With this data, compared to the consumption requirement of the province which is 324,580 monthly, our stocks will last for more than eight months,” Libatique said.

He also explained that for the past five years, Pangasinan has been importing rice since a large percentage of the produce here is sold to other provinces.

“Pangasinan is almost self-sufficient in terms of palay production and consumption requirement but we can’t control stock movement from within so we still import,” he said.

The whole of Pangasinan produces 8.5 million bags of palay annually, 40% of which comes from the western part.#
